This may not be the best trip SANS has ever taken, but it is the most awe-inspiring one. The ability of people of color to persevere in the worst of circumstances, the love of so many people in SANS and all over the country who need to help those in desperation, the incredible singing opportunities with people of all ages, and the power of New Orleans and its music to help heal the spirit. To think we have been a part of helping people and receiving so much in return. This has been one of the most profound experiences of my life. Thank you SANS.
Our mission of touching other cultures through music was certainly fulfilled at last night’s concert. I’m so glad we got to spend a whole week in Houma, as I think it took a week for the culture of the area we were in to “settle” in. People were nice to us, and friendly, but this time when we sang it really meant something to us and I hope to them. People took the time to really talk to us, and to explain some aspects of their culture to us.
First night in New Orleans -- took cab ride into town to go to Deanie’s Seafood. Had a very interesting lecture on Post Katrina state of town. Cab driver wanted to stress that not just the “Black 9th ward” was hit, even millionaires’ homes were destroyed. He didn’t have a very optimistic outlook for the future.
